Shopping for Vintage Belts: Discovering Versatility at Kameo Vintage

Written By Gavin Lipinski

Belts are truly one of fashion’s most versatile accessories. From leather to rubber, nylon to cotton, studded and embroidered, belts truly have it all. But many of us have limited our belt usage to solely around our waists exactly where belt loops exist. Melissa Carter, owner and stylist at Kameo Vintage, encourages her clients to style belts in ways that are less traditional — over a body con or loose dress to cinch the waist and create a different silhouette, or perhaps over a blazer to bring a new level of elegance to the workplace.

The correct size is key

When shopping for a belt it's important to check for the quality of the hardware, the give of the material and most importantly, the correct size. Even the highest quality of belts will begin to wear and tear after a few uses due to incorrect sizing. Trust me, nothing breaks like a heart when you notice the first tear in a new leather belt! Instead, aim for the middle hole of your belt to be the size you most often chose.

Vintage shopping done right

Kameo Vintage has done a lot of the leg-work for you and their curated collection of nostalgic clothing and accessories make vintage shopping easy and fun for people of all walks of life. Melissa’s committed team of stylists are always ready to help you select the perfect belt, and the perfect way to style it.

Here are some of our favorite belts:

The 1970’s Marianna Gold Face Belt commands attention, and can bring any look to the next level. This is a one-size belt that hugs your body, with an ornately carved clasp that closes in the front — perfectly chic. Try pairing this belt with a simple white button up and jeans, or even over a dress for an evening out.

Sourced from France, the 1960’s Lion Chain Belt with Choker adds a sturdy shine to any outfit. The belt features a beautiful, delicate choker that is completed with a lion pendant. Pair this with leather pants and gold jewelry for something more street style, or perhaps a long skirt for a more bohemian look.

Looking for something a little more quirky, try the 1980’s Snakeskin Elephant Belt. The deep brown snake skin makes the dueling elephant heads whose interwoven tusks make up the clasp, shine. This belt can be the statement piece of an outfit, or simply the final touch in the perfectly curated outfit.

Remember, never forget to look at the most conventional of accessories, in unconventional ways!
