MAANCY’s Masterpiece: The Art of Interchangeable Jewelry

Written by Gavin Lipinski

MAANCY (MAHN-see), the ingenious founder and creative director of her eponymous Chicago-based brand, is revolutionizing jewelry with customizable pieces. Drawing inspiration from minimalism and surrealism, her collection features versatile designs like the Fluted Earrings and Fluted Collar Necklace, which allow wearers to interchange gemstone orbs between both accessories.

Initially considering magnets for interchangeability, MAANCY found them misaligned with her brand's ethos. "So we did engineer a rubber pushpin style," she explains. "That took me about six to eight months to perfect through various prototypes."

A graduate of the Gemological Institute of America with a degree in colored stones and pearls, Maancy emphasizes the importance of material quality. "Knowing how and what materials we are using is really, really important," she notes. "I think that a lot of sustainability, even if it's made in a sustainable manner, if the piece is not beautiful and can transcend through generations and it's not sustainable."

Each gemstone is hand-selected, ensuring exceptional quality, and every piece is crafted in solid sterling silver, designed to be cherished across generations. Her recent selection of stones harks back to jewelry's origins as symbolic art forms, featuring gems like lapis lazuli, chalcedony, jade, and onyx. "Jewelry started more as symbolism and had a lot of spiritual and protective meanings, and it marked social statuses or tribal identities," Maancy reflects.
